Does your family know what your career is?

“You’re a project manager in technology. You promote tech and encourage people to follow this course of career because there are so many opportunities.” Mum

“I think you work in cyber because you are always talking about it” Son 6yrs

“You do SWiT with @SilkaPatel” Daughter 10yrs

I had a narrow view of careers when I was growing up. I took a traditional subject and pathway, then a squiggly journey as I tried to evolve it into something “more me”. It’s important for us to share what we do with people and help broaden their career horizons.

Who has been a big inspiration in your life?

My dad was an absolute hero – he taught me to work hard, take pride in everything and make time for family and fun! I have a few male role models. Some who’ve had a big impact on me: @StuartMacDonald inspired me to have confidence – in myself, my abilities and my decisions. @JamieGraham inspired me to understand myself and my strengths and stop beating myself up trying to tackle my weaknesses. @RobinHuggins inspired me to always “show-up” and share to support others. There is something to learn from everyone we meet when we take the time to share.

What is your super power?

I’ve been called a trailblazer, tour de force, influencer and champion. Truth is I just see stuff that needs to be done, and I do it. I recently learned this is down to my mix of strengths (CliftonStrengths). I am an activator, arranger and achiever which means I see opportunities for change and can orchestrate people and parts to make it happen. Thanks to @RhonaCameron I know this is my superpower and I can focus on how best to use it. Focussing on our strengths is really empowering!

What would you tell your teenage self?

Stop trying to fit in and just be yourself – people will love you for it, I promise. Take up every opportunity to try something new and get out your comfort zone to find out what you enjoy. Follow what makes you happy, use what you are good at, and turn this into a career. Good luck!
