Leaving school in the late 1990s I was torn between following a career in Music or Computing. Following an undergraduate degree in Computing, one of only three female students in a class of 70+, my career in tech began as a Software Engineer. I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to transition within the organisation I was working to become a Technical Trainer, enabling me to apply my technical skills whilst developing in an educational role. This opportunity was pivotal in my career as I realised that I had a passion for helping others to develop and from there I went on to establish and lead educational programmes in the private and public sector, building global and diverse teams. Throughout my career I have been exposed to a breadth of industry sectors and been fortunate to travel globally and learn a diverse range of skills. Moving into the academic sector 15 years ago I was involved in a project to address the skills gap in data and AI and this sparked my interest in this area. I went on to lead an £8M skills and talent programme at The Data Lab innovation centre, later joining the the senior leadership team and was recently appointed to the role of Interim CEO.
Biggest challenge?
Navigating work and home life as a professional and a mum is a huge challenge. They are both full time jobs and nobody prepares you for this ride. I have been fortunate to have employers who support team members to do both and this had made me realise what is important when considering roles. The culture of an organisation should be high, if not top priority when job-seeking for everyone. I often get the mum-guilt, wondering whether I’m trying to spread myself too thinly but hope that my children learn from both my success and my mistakes along the way, particularly resilience, ambition and and the ability to achieve anything if you are prepared to work hard for it.
Biggest inspiration in your life?
There are two people who immediately come to mind when I’m asked this question:
The first time I saw former CEO Gillian Docherty OBE on stage I was inspired by her enthusiasm and her presence on stage. I had just accepted my role at The Data Lab and was excited to realise this was an opportunity to work with Gillian. I learned so much during this time and am in no doubt that her support and belief played a huge part in me having the confidence to follow in her footsteps in my current role as interim CEO.
Favourite past time?
Apart from spending time with my family, I really enjoy playing Padel and swimming. Until recently my stock answer to this question would be a spa, but I now realise that if I undertake either of these activities it really helps me unwind, as well as stay healthy. Then I find it easier to relax afterwards and feel the benefit of taking the time to unwind through activity first.
