I teach video game design at Abertay University. Game design can be practical, theoretical and technical; it’s difficult to define, but that is what makes it so fun. My research is interested in forming connections between players and I explore this by making (often silly) games for players. The best thing about my job is our students – their enthusiasm, talent and curiosity is inspirational, and I feel so lucky to be a small part of their journey.
I grew up in a tiny town on the west coast of Scotland. I loved fantasy books, all things computers and playing games. My friends didn’t really like the same things, so I hid my hobbies from them. At 16, I discovered Abertay and fell in love with the idea that I could learn to make games – I didn’t realise that was something a wee girl from Stewarton could do. At uni I felt like I’d finally found my people; they liked similar things, and we learned to make games together.
What is your spirit animal?
A magpie – I’m curious and am always attracted to (or distracted by) shiny things.
If you were ruler of the world for a day, what would you change first?
I’d make it that ALL adults got a playtime, much like at school AND that playtime was led by young people – they are play experts after all! We can all learn so much from each other and it would hugely help wellbeing. I’d also make sure young people got more support and time to draw, play and tinker with stuff to figure out how the world works through curiosity and experimentation. It can only lead to good things.
What would you tell your teenage self?
Not to worry so much! Rather than worrying about what other people think, just be you – show people who you are and don’t hide. It leads to a happier you and much better friendships.
What is your superpower?
I’ve taught my daughter that breathing is a superpower. My thinking is that remembering to stop and to take a breath tends to make a huge difference. For me, it helps me present to hundreds of people, AND stops me from saying the first thing that pops into my head (which has got me into trouble in the past!)
What is your favourite past time?
Reading books, playing games and eating too much cake.
